Carbon Brief: Deforestation charts

Forest lost around the world has reduced in recent decades, but countries are still off track to meet important deforestation targets.

Here are the charts I made for the aforelinked article:

A bar chart showing the amount of deforestation in global regions over 1990-2025, in 1,000 hectares per year. Annual deforestation in South America - where the highest rates of forest loss occur - has almost halved since 1990

A coropleth world map showing forest area net gain and loss between 1990 and 2025, in hectares. The world is losing more forest than it gains every year

A bar chart showing countries with highest net gain and loss of forest area over 2015-25, in 1,000 hectares per year. China gained far more forest than it lost in the past decade, while the opposite was true in Brazil

A set of slope charts showing the change in forest carbon stock in global regions and subregions over 1990-2025, in millions of tonnes. The amount of carbon stored in the world's forests has barely changed since 1990, aside from some regional outliers

A set of piecharts showing the percentage of regional forests in protected areas (dark blue) and outside protected areas (light blue) in 2025. 26% of Asia's forest land is in protected areas - the highest of any region
